Overwatch guide

Overwatch turns AP into reaction shots inside an adjustable cone. It works on predictable movement and actions, but it is not a guaranteed way to cancel an enemy's entire turn.

Shape the cone around forced movement

Aim at the route or action point an enemy must use, not the largest visible area. EA confirms that cone length changes Chance-to-Hit, so compare the live preview while resizing instead of assuming that maximum reach is the best setting.

Activate it last

Activating Overwatch immediately ends that Operator's turn. Move, use support actions, and confirm the firing lane first. The AP invested determines how many targets can trigger shots.

Check what stops movement and why Overwatch is not working

  • The enemy never moved or acted inside the painted cone.
  • Line of sight was blocked when the trigger occurred.
  • The shooter was attacked or otherwise lost the prepared state before firing, as shown in launch guide footage.
  • The shot triggered but missed; a longer cone can change the displayed Chance-to-Hit.

Use it when direct fire is inefficient

  • No current target offers a reasonable hit chance.
  • An enemy must leave cover or cross an objective lane.
  • A hit on a moving enemy can interrupt its movement.
  • The squad needs area denial more than immediate damage.
